Underwood named Hoggard football coach
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Hoggard High School has a new football coach, but he’s really not new to the job.
Today Hoggard announced Craig Underwood has been promoted to head coach.
“My family and I, we are Hoggard people to the core,” Underwood said. “So to have the opportunity at basically getting your dream job, not many people get to experience that. So I am feeling… I’m a very happy man right now.”
Underwood succeeds Craig Braswell, who stepped down earlier this year. Underwood, a Hoggard alum, had served as the Vikings’ interim coach early last season while Braswell was out on medical leave.
“Craig has been a big part of the success we have had on special teams and defense for the last nine years, and did an outstanding job as interim head coach this past season while I was away,” Braswell, who is still Hoggard’s athletic director, said in a statement. “Craig is obviously a great fit for our football program, and very important to us, he is an outstanding history teacher who interacts well with our faculty. Craig is also a strong role model for our student athletes at Hoggard who wants to make a difference in the lives of the young people he teaches and coaches.”
