Unlicensed massage therapist accused of secretly recording clients in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Wilmington man on multiple charges, including operating as an unlicensed massage therapist and secretly recording female clients without their knowledge.
The sheriff’s office says the arrest followed an extensive investigation after several victims filed complaints against Robert Charles Herring.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Herring, of 5305 Kipling Ct. in Wilmington, had been offering free massage services from his home. He allegedly claimed these services were part of his student curriculum and that he needed additional hours to complete his certification. However, investigators say they discovered that Herring was not enrolled in any massage therapy program and lacked proper certification.
The sheriff’s office says that Herring had been secretly videotaping the massage sessions without the consent of his clients.
Herring faces 12 felony counts of secret peeping and is being held on a $125,000 secured bond.
The sheriff’s office is urging anyone who may have received massage services from Herring or who may have information related to this case to come forward.
