UPDATE: Bank robbery suspect arrested


WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The man Wilmington Police say robbed an area bank and tried to rob another bank is now in custody.

According to jail records, Joseph Paul Howard III, 35, is facing charges including common law robbery and attempted common law robbery. He’s in jail under a $250,000 bond.

Records show he was booked in jail around 3:40 a.m., but police say he was arrested yesterday evening. Police say he was found inside a home in the 100 block of North Carolina Avenue hiding in the insulation of the attic.

Howard is accused of trying to rob the Bank of America on Carolina Beach Road and robbing the First Citizens Bank on 17th Street yesterday afternoon.

According to the Star News, Howard was released from custody on Friday after being held since December. Court records show he is facing charges including breaking and entering and first degree burglary, the paper said.

N.C. Department of Correction records show Howard has a lengthy criminal record that includes burglary charges as well as at least two peeping tom convictions.
