UPDATE: Both drivers charged after crash takes out fire hydrant
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police say alcohol was a factor in a traffic accident this afternoon that took out a fire hydrant.
A Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman says at about 12:55 p.m. Christine Bates Ferguson was driving a blue Chevrolet Equinox when she hit a red Chevrolet Cobalt in the intersection of S. 5th Avenue and Castle Streets. The impact spun the Cobalt around and into the hydrant in front of Rx Restaurant, which sent water into the street from the broken hydrant.
Ferguson is charged with DWI. The driver of the Cobalt, Torrie Shanee Bryant, is charged with driving while license revoked and failure to restrain a child.
Police say there were minor injuries from the crash and that both vehicles were totaled.
CFPUA and Wilmington Fire Department also responded to the scene.
