Update on explosion in Leland’s Magnolia Greens neighborhood

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Damage assessments are still underway following an explosion in the 1300 block of Suncrest Way in Magnolia Greens in Leland on Friday.
One person was rescued from the home and another sustained injuries, neither were transported to the hospital.
Town of Leland Building Inspectors, police, emergency management, and Leland Fire/Rescue crews remain on the scene Saturday for property safety and structural evaluations.
Approximately 70 units were assessed by the inspectors in the Three Oaks section. Due to the structural damage, four homes have been deemed unsafe to occupy. The Town of Leland said that most damage outside of the immediate impact area is minor and they’re safe for residents to enter.
The initial sweep is complete. As the investigation continues, fencing will be installed to secure the affected area. Residents are encouraged to stay out of the area.
The exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
The Town of Leland will work with insurance providers and other partners to determine the cause when it is safe to do so.
The Town of Leland is planning to hold a community meeting where officials will provide updates and answer questions from those affected. Further details about the meeting have not been released.
This is an ongoing investigation and we will have more details as they emerge.
