Update on NHCS data breach

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — We have more information about a student data breach that affected New Hanover County Schools.

The interim superintendent Christopher R. Barnes shared an update about the recent PowerSchool data breach. Friday, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI) confirmed that teacher and student data was accessed via an unauthorized party due to the actions of a PowerSchool employee.

According to PowerSchool, the breach has been contained and the compromised data was not share and has been securely destroyed. It was also confirmed that no preventative measures could have been taken by NHCS or DPI.

Interim superintendent Barnes adds, one of their highest priorities is protecting the student and staff data. They are taking this incident seriously and will notify the individuals whose data was involved in the breach once DPI provides the identities.

New Hanover County Schools is actively working with the Department of Public Instruction and PowerSchool to assess the full extent of this nationwide breach and identify any necessary steps to safeguard the community’s information.
