NAKINA, NC (WWAY) — A man has been charged with first-degree murder and first-degree arson following a deadly fire in Nakina, according to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a structure fire and disturbance late on March 8 and into the early hours of March 9 at 700 Manly Smith Road. Fire and EMS personnel also arrived on scene to assist.

After firefighters with the Nakina Fire Department extinguished the fire, they discovered a body inside the home, the sheriff’s office said.

Investigators identified the victim as Wendell Smith of Nakina. His family has been notified.

Following an investigation involving the sheriff’s office, the State Bureau of Investigation, the Columbus County Fire Marshal’s Office, and the State Fire Marshal’s Office, authorities charged Christopher Heimnick, 28, with first-degree murder and first-degree arson. He was given a $1.5 million bond.

“Our investigators, alongside our state and local partners, have worked tirelessly to bring answers and accountability in this case,” Sheriff Bill Rogers said in a statement. “Losing a life under such tragic circumstances is devastating, and we are committed to seeking justice for Mr. Smith and his family.”

The investigation remains ongoing.
