US gives directive to schools on transgender bathroom access

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration says it wants to clarify the expectations of public schools when it comes to the rights of transgender students.

The departments of Education and Justice are releasing a directive Friday, reminding school districts that they are obligated to treat transgender students in a way that matches their gender identity.

The directive says that includes their access to bathrooms and locker rooms.

Jessica Swencki, the spokeswoman with Brunswick County Schools, sent the following statement on the topic:

Public schools, by design. are inclusive environments. We are charged with meeting the individual learning, social, and emotional needs of all students. We must do this in a safe and orderly manner. While we have yet to review President Obama’s letter, our commitment to work with all students and their families is unwavering, as is our duty to follow the law.
