Versatile Jieem Bullock brings home gold medal from National meet

LELAND, NC (WWAY)–Last week on WWAY news we told you the story of of two North Brunswick high school long jumpers that were headed to the New Balance Indoor National meet. On Monday, Scorpion junior Jieem Bullock returned to the Cape Fear as a National champion in the long jump.

“It was crazy really, it was an amazing experience. Honestly, I was wondering if it was in me? I proved my point that it was,”said North Brunswick junior Jieem Bullock.

In his first jump of the meet, Bullock shattered his old personal record. His previous PR was just under 23 feet, but at the Armory he jumped 24′ 4”1/4. This jump was not only a milestone for Jieem, but it won him his first national championship.

“He didn’t even know that he jumped a 24 until a few jumps afterwards, when they finally announced it. It was definitely an awesome experience,”said North Brunswick Track & Field coach Kenny Gilliard.

The crazy thing about the accomplishment is that he just doesn’t long jump, he completes in four different events. On Thursday at the Ashley track meet Bullock broke another personal record. He cleared 6’8” in the high jump winning the meet with ease, while capturing another personal record.

“We are going to push him in every event that he does; high jump, long jump, the hurdles, the sprints, the relays. Wherever he wants to go, we are going to push him,”said Gilliard.

In addition to track, Bullock plays football for North Brunswick high school and has found success on the field as well. He thinks with all the different activities and events he does it makes him a better all-around athlete.

“Just doing all of that, it helps on different events.  It just all connects it seems like. I will continue to get better its just hard work and dedication, that is it,”said Bullock.
