Veteran chooses his forever home in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– After more than seven years, a marine veteran will call Wilmington his forever home.

On Saturday, the “Homes for Our Troops” organization held a special ceremony for Corporal Dominic Davila, a Marine veteran who lost his right foot while serving in Afghanistan.

The non-profit organization dedicates itself to build homes that are specially adapted for severely injured veterans. They make homes that exceed ADA standards, like making wider halls and doorways.

The organization honored their newest recipient, Davila, to kick off the beginning of the building process with a special escort and ceremony at the Winter Park Baptist Church.

Davila says he is still in awe that it’s all happening.

“I just feel kind of in shock, it’s really hard to grasp what’s been going on,” said Davila. “It’s been 7 or 8 years since we have applied and been in the program. It’s taken this amount of time, and now that it’s here, it doesn’t feel real at all.”

Once the construction of the home is complete, the organization will hold another special ceremony for Davila.
