Vice President Biden to visit Durham on anti-cancer efforts

DURHAM, NC (AP) – Vice President Joe Biden plans to travel to North Carolina next week to discuss the Obama administration’s new initiative to accelerate efforts to cure cancer.

The White House said Friday that Biden would visit Durham on Wednesday, with additional detail announced later. Duke University spokeswoman Sarah Avery confirmed it would occur on the campus of Duke’s School of Medicine but had no other information.

President Obama announced last month Biden would lead the “moonshot” federal task force looking for ways to streamline government’s role toward finding the cure. Obama’s federal budget request is expected to seek $750 million for cancer research.

Biden’s son, Beau, died from brain cancer last May.
