CURRIE, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina State Archives will host a virtual “lunch and learn” program next week to mark the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge.

The event, titled “Marching Toward Revolution,” is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 19, from noon to 1 p.m.

The Battle of Moores Creek Bridge was fought Feb. 27, 1776, northwest of Wilmington in present-day Pender County. It is considered the first Revolutionary War skirmish in North Carolina. While the conflict was relatively small, historians say the Patriot victory helped build local support for American independence and slowed Loyalist recruitment efforts across the South.

Archivists Alison Thurman, Josh Hager and Katie Crickmore will discuss North Carolina’s early steps toward revolution, including the Committees of Safety, the flight of Royal Gov. Josiah Martin and details of the battle itself.

Registration is required in advance through Zoom.
