Volunteers build up dunes with Christmas trees
CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Surfrider Foundation Cape Fear Chapter along with more than 50 volunteers worked together Saturday morning to help build up the dunes on Pleasure Island.
The group of volunteers met at the Tennessee Avenue beach access where they took all the Christmas trees collected this past month from the town and spread them out along the dunes.
Cape Fear Chapter Vice Chair Lindsey Deignan said they had about 60-70 trees to put along the shore. Volunteers took a tree and installed it along the dune, then secured it with all natural materials. She says, over time the sand will bury the tree and build up the dunes.
“It’s a really positive event, said Deignan. “People are really excited to be able to come out to the beach on a beautiful day and then know that they are doing something very positive and impactful on the beach. It’s fun for them because they can come back after a month, two months, or this summer and can see how much the sand dunes have been built up.”
She says this is the third year the foundation has been able to put on this event and hopes to continue having it.
