Voters unhappy with congressional map get in last words

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – North Carolina voters who successfully got the state’s congressional district map redrawn have put in their last words on why the General Assembly did another bad job and why federal judges should rework the boundaries themselves.

Attorneys for David Harris and Christine Bowser filed their reply Wednesday night to this week’s written arguments by lawyers for the state, who urged a federal court to let the new boundaries approved by lawmakers last month stand for the June 7 primary.

The voters already filed their full objections to the new map last week, accusing Republican legislators of replacing racial gerrymandering of the 1st and 12th Districts with a partisan gerrymandering favoring the GOP and weakening minority voting power.

The court has not said how it will proceed.
