Warming Center in Whiteville opens as temperatures drop
WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — As temperatures plummet this week, warming shelters in our area are opening to local homeless populations, including in Whiteville.
Facts of Life Church, with the support of other area churches, nonprofits and Columbus County Emergency Management, is running The Warming Center for the next week.
The shelter opens from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. anytime temperatures fall below 40 degrees. The shelter provides food and hygiene products and is temporarily extending hours to serve three meals due to Friday’s winter weather.
Pastor Daisy Brooks said anyone in need, whether homeless or without heat, is welcome at the shelter.
“Love is an action word. The bible tells us to love one another, even as he has loved us and we can’t just say we love and then see somebody going through and not actually do something,” Brooks said.
If you want to donate to the Warming Center, Brooks recommends bringing checks or Walmart or Food Lion gift cards to their location at 506 N Lee St, Whiteville, NC 28472.
