Warming Shelter ILM open for 11th of 12 straight nights
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With bitterly cold temperatures hitting the Cape Fear Monday night, the Warming Shelter ILM continues to be open.
Shelter director Meg McBride said they are at full capacity, with the Salvation Army opening up extra winter bedding and taking in people the shelter has had to turn away.
She added that she has had 4 porta-potties placed in the parking lot of Grace United Methodist Church, and the city has helped pick up trash.
A county emergency management team drove around on Sunday and picked up volunteers to drive them to the shelter to help out.
Lakeisha Fields used to be homeless herself and said she enjoys giving back during a time like this.
“It’s very rewarding, you know, you know, dealing with individuals, that need help, just making a difference in the community,” Fields said.
The shelter will be open again on Tuesday night, closing on Wednesday morning, which will end a streak of 12 straight nights open.
