Warming Shelter ILM opened with two locations
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– Coats, Jackets, beds and a place to stay for the night are ready for people who are experiencing homelessness.
Meg McBride, the director of Warming Shelter ILM, says they are here to help on what is expected to be some of the coldest nights of the year so far.
“We are opening up an emergency overnight cold winter weather for people experiencing homelessness,” said McBride.
Well over fifty people gathered inside to stay out of the windy winter weather and Tyler Garret, one of the residents staying over the night, says the hospitality is incredible
“I can tell you right now, you step into the front door, turn to your right, step into the gymnasium door, everybody has plenty of space,” said Garret.
This season, they are open at two locations, one at the Purpose Church International at 920 North 6th Street, and another at Grace United Methodist Church on 401 grace street.
“I am all about collaboration. I love to work with other organizations. This is really exciting to me, to have this relationship with Purpose Church and our second year with grace,” said McBride.
Despite many volunteers assisting and other help coming from the community, McBride explains what they still might need for the night.
“Right now, we are pretty good with supplies, food, and snacks. We will take those donations for the next time we are going to be open. We are really asking to be generous this year,” said McBride.
While the shelter is helping others warm, Wilmington Fire Department Chief Steve Mason says to also do your part and help people you know.
“If you know someone who may or may not have adequate heat in their home, you should check on them. Make sure they got plenty of warm blankets and some sort of heating source,” said Mason.
