Waves and Walkers: Annual Senior Beach Day

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Nearly 100 seniors from Wilmington visited Carolina Beach Thursday for an annual beach day event focused on accessibility.

Ocean Cure, a local nonprofit, placed a beach mat at the Carolina Beach boardwalk access to help residents using wheelchairs and walkers safely reach the sand.

The event was hosted by Liberty Senior Living communities. Residents took part in beach games, water sports, and adapted surfing.

This year marked the first time in the event’s 10-year history that Liberty communities from outside the Wilmington area joined. That included seniors from Cary.

Haley Kinne-Norris, regional wellness and enrichment coordinator with Liberty Senior Living, said the mat makes the day possible.

“Accessibility is a huge factor that plays a role for many people. So we are very fortunate that Ocean Cure has this mat out on the beach, and that we are able to do it every year — because our residents who are in wheelchairs, utilize walkers, or have assistive devices are able to successfully have a day on the beach,” Kinne-Norris said.

Ocean Cure partnered with Liberty Senior Living to make the event possible. The nonprofit’s mission is to increase beach access for people with disabilities.
