‘We did not do anything wrong;’ Bruns. election board refers alleged misconduct to state board

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY-TV) – The Cape Fear is just weeks away from the primary election and in Brunswick County, election officials are looking into allegations of voter registration fraud.

The Brunswick County Board of Elections met on Tuesday as the State Board of Elections investigates these allegations that were submitted by the Brunswick County board.

The State Board said they are looking into allegations of voter registration driver workers falsifying information including inaccurate voter registration applications. This investigation spans across several counties in the state including Brunswick County.

The state board said there have been voter registration applications turned into county boards that have missing information or inaccurate voter information. It is a Class 1 felony to falsify a voter registration form.

Officials said they have also received complaints of people going door-to-door impersonating state or county election workers.

Brunswick County Board of Elections Director, Sara LaVere clarified on Tuesday that they have not received report of people impersonating election workers in the county.

LaVere said that their office is not being investigated in regard to misconduct but that their office had actually sent these reports to the state board for investigation based on reports of misconduct that occurred in 2024.

“We did not do anything wrong nor did poll workers so this really has to do with something a third party or individuals were doing but we discovered it which is how the process is supposed to work and we forwarded those concerns to the state board of elections who does the investigation,” LaVere said.

The state board said voter registration workers are also misinforming voters that they must re-register to vote in order to cast a ballot in future elections. The state board said this isn’t true and voters do not need to re-register unless they move counties.

LaVere did clarify that the only reports their office has sent to the state board were in regard to voter registration forms with inaccurate information such as with an incorrect birthday or voter identification number.

LaVere said there is no additional information she can provide regarding the investigation as it’s being handled at the state level.
