WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As construction begins at New Hanover High School, New Hanover County Schools has unveiled a dedicated webpage to provide families and community members with updates on the ongoing project and guidance on accessing school services.

According to a news release, the first phase of the project is currently underway, which focuses on stabilizing the foundation of the southern wall facing Market Street and assessing the masonry work required. Despite the construction, the school district says the building remains structurally sound, and classes are set to begin on Aug. 27 as scheduled.

“New Hanover High School is our community’s flagship school, and we are proud of its history,” said Eddie Anderson, NHCS Assistant Superintendent of Operations. “While this project will cause some inconvenience, it’s part of a long-term investment in the building.”

Due to construction impacting the main entrance, the school offices will be relocated to the Princess Street side of the main building. The newly launched webpage provides detailed information on how students and visitors can access the school, parking arrangements, and the progress of the construction. The page will be regularly updated to keep the community informed.

An open house is scheduled for Aug. 21 from 5-7:30 p.m., giving students a chance to tour the school and ask questions.

“We’re excited to start the 2024-25 school year, and we’re ready for parents and students,” said Principal Philip Sutton. “We’re going to have some challenges, but that’s okay. Our district is supporting us, our families and community are supporting us, and we’re excited for a new school year.”

New Hanover High School, which began construction in 1919 and opened its doors in 1922, is one of the oldest high school buildings still in use in North Carolina.
