West Brunswick football coach says he was fired because he wouldn’t quit

SHALLOTTE, NC (WWAY) — A football coach says he was fired from his job at West Brunswick High School because he would not quit.

Bob Hanna says was caught off guard by the decision from West Brunswick administrators after just one year leading the Trojans.

“The truth is I was asked to resign,” Hanna told WWAY. “I told them I would not break the promise I made to my players. I told the kids to trust me that I would be there for at least three years, and that when they graduate from West they will be able to look back and be proud of what we accomplished together. The three-year commitment was the same time span I gave to the AD and principal when they hired me. Since I would not resign, they fired me.”

In his only season in Shallotte Hanna guided the Trojans to a 5-7 record.

“I want to thank Bob Hanna for his hard work at West,” AD Jimmy Fletcher said. “We realized it was not the right fit for out program, and we are going to start the search for our new head coach.”

Hanna has 44 years of coaching experience, including 20 as head coach and athletic director at Irmo High School in suburban Columbia, SC. During his time at Irmo, he led his team to three state championship games.

As a head coach, Hanna has compiled a record of 262-176-2. He was 5-7 at West Brunswick. This includes a 42-14 first round 3-A state playoff loss to Chapel Hill.
