West Columbus outfielder reflects on being picked in 2nd round of MLB Draft
CERRO GORDO, NC (WWAY) — West Columbus senior outfielder E.J. Jenkins was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 2nd round on Monday night at the MLB Draft. On Tuesday West Columbus pitcher Trey Benton made his television hosting debut. Benton interviewed Jenkins to get his take on being the 45th overall pick of the 2015 MLB Draft.
Breakdown of Trey Benton’s interview with E.J. Jenkins is below: (Click the icon above to see it)
Trey Benton: “What do you think about the Rangers organization drafting you?”
E.J. Jenkins: “I was thinking that if I didn’t go low in the first round then I figured I would get picked high in the second round, just a matter of time.”
“When will you know about any signing or not signing?”
“Negotiations are going on right now, I won’t know anything about negotiations until the Texas Rangers give me a call.”
“What are your travel plans. When might you go see the Rangers?”
“I’ve got about 3-4 days after graduation before I get on a plane and head to Texas.””
“On behalf of West Columbus baseball and being your teammate for all these years I congratulate you.”
MLB.COM scouting report: “West Columbus High in Cerro Gordo, NC, hasn’t had a player drafted since Donell Nixon was a Mariners 10th-rounder 35 years ago, but that will change when Jenkins becomes one of the first outfielders to come off the board in June. Like Nixon, he stands out most with his speed, though Jenkins has the offensive upside to exceed Nixon’s brief big league career. Jenkins ran a 6.32-second 60-yard dash at the East Coast Professional Showcase last July, though he’s more of a plus runner than a true burner. He’s definitely quick enough to steal bases and patrol center field, where his below-average arm isn’t a liability. Though the UNC Wilmington recruit still is developing as a hitter, he’s not completely raw either. His bat speed is improving and he shows some feel for the barrel. Power won’t ever be the focus of his game, but he can drive the ball to his pull side and could produce double-digit home run totals once he gets stronger.”
Baseball America listed Jenkins as the 42nd best prospect in the nation prior to the MLB Draft. They came awfully close to the hitting their projection right on the head. Jenkins was the 45th overall selection.
Note: E.J. Jenkins signed a national letter of intent with UNC Wilmington several months ago for baseball. In our interview last week Jenkins addressed the possibility of playing at UNC Wilmington if he doesn’t come to terms with the Texas Rangers. “Really it’s a win-win situation,” Jenkins told WWAY. If pro ball doesn’t work out I’ve always got a full ride at UNCW to play for coach Scalf.”
