Western NC park closes after retaining wall collapses, anticipating more rain

Chimney Rock Park will be closed until the collapsed retaining wall in the upper parking lot can be assessed and stabilized, according to the park’s official Twitter account.

The park had just reopened on May 22, 2018 after closing due to heavy storms causing part of the foundation in the upper parking lot area to crack and sink in about two feet.

The park posted to their Facebook page showing images of the collapsed wall and issuing a notice the park will close until work can be done on the wall.

Visit chimneyrockpark.com for updates on when the park will reopen.

The park closure also comes as much of the state is anticipating heavy rains from subtropical storm Alberto. Nearby Polk County has issued voluntary evacuations Sunday evening due to the storm.
