WFD holds free car-seat check for parents

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Fire Department held a free car-seat check for parents on Tuesday at the Fit for Fun Center.

Parents could come out and have their car seats checked or even get help installing seats for the first time.

A spokesperson for the Fire Department said parents need to pay attention to the height and weight limits on their car seats.

Once their child has reached those limits, they need to be moved into a larger seat.

Car seats also have expiration dates, so make sure to check, especially if you have children a few years apart.

Sarah Kemp has a six-month-old son and said it was great getting help installing a new seat for her son.

“I mean, it definitely saved me time,” Kemp said. “I would not have read through that 100-page booklet to figure it out. And seeing how much that you really have to like push around to make sure it’s tight, I wouldn’t have known to do all those checks. So it was really reassuring to have them here to show me how to do it.”

The next car-seat check will be held on Thursday, May 8th, at Station 5 from 9 am until 11:30 am.
