What an expert says about alcohol and cancer risks

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) –Recent concerns about the link between alcohol and cancer prompted us to ask health experts advice on how to reduce the risks. Dr. Patrick Maguire, a radiation oncologist at Novant Health Cancer Institute, explains how alcohol consumption is tied to several types of cancer and what steps you can take to lower your risk.

Dr. Maguire explains that alcohol is linked to several cancers, including those of the mouth, throat, and liver. While the connection between alcohol and cancers like breast and colon cancer is less commonly discussed, there is still a correlation, according to Maguire.

Maguire stresses that it’s not necessary to eliminate alcohol entirely, but rather to find a healthier balance in your drinking habits. “If you want zero risk, obviously don’t drink alcohol at all. But that might not be practical or a choice that a lot of adults want to make. Just do it sparingly,” he advises.

Dr. Maguire recommends avoiding drinking on a daily basis or drinking heavily on a regular basis. Though it can be difficult to gauge, he says that drinking several alcoholic drinks a day can increase the chances of developing cancer.
