What’s up with Jerry Wainwright?

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — We spotted former UNCW men’s head basketball coach Jerry Wainwright at a high school football game recently. It appears the coach will lay low during the upcoming basketball season. Of course with all coaches, that’s subject to change.

Jerry Wainwright served as the UNCW men’s head basketball coach from 1994 to 2002. He also had head coaching stints at Richmond and DePaul. Wainwright recently told us about his plans for the upcoming basketball season. “I think I’m going to do a lot of observing,” Wainwright said. “I know I’ll go to several schools, talk to coaches, watch practice, we’ll see what happens. I had a great two years at Marquette(director of basketball operations, then elevated to a full assistant), I really really enjoyed it, but I’ve been away from my family for the last three years because I was an assistant in California and two years in Wisconsin. I’d like to enjoy the grandkids more this year and watch other people get their hair as gray as mine.”

Note: Scott Wainwright is the son of Jerry Wainwright. Scott Wainwright is the head boys basketball coach at South Brunswick High School in Boiling Spring Lakes.
