Whiteville family trapped in home after tree falls through home
Downed trees and wind cause power outages, and fallen trees in homes and roads
WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) – Whiteville experienced downed trees falling on highways and on homes, which were destroyed.
One of the damaged homes was occupied by a family of five who had to be rescued by Whiteville firefighters, that home is North Lee Street.
A limb broke through the roof and wedged the front door shut, the only way out was the window.
That tree fell into the living room, missed everyone inside and no one was hurt.
Director of Emergency Services in Whiteville Hal Lowder, another home was damaged by a large tree and sustained extensive damage.
The other home was unoccupied and it was demolished by a pecan tree, so both homes were a total loss,” he said. “Pretty much it was just wind damage and tree damage, and that was our two most extensive damage to occupancies.”
According to Lowder outages are no longer an issue for most.
“All of the traffic lights are operational at this time,” he said. “We only have a few homes without power, most of the power in Whiteville has been restored.”
