Whiteville High has to win twice on Saturday to secure 1-A state baseball title


ZEBULON, NC (WWAY) — The two-time defending 1-A state champions are in a bit of a hole. Whiteville lost 5-4 in game one of their best of three state championship against Cherryville.

Whiteville scored the first two runs of the game. Cherryville came back to score four un-answered runs. Whiteville scored twice it the top of the 7th inning to knot the game at 4-4, but Cherryville won 5-4 after a walk-off single from Randall Long.

Game two of the best of three series is set for 2pm in Zebulon on Saturday. If there ends up being a game three it’ll either be played at 5pm or 8pm.
