WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) —  The City of Whiteville and Whiteville Police Department are investigating who may have put up a confederate flag on city property.

According to City Manager Darren Currie, they believe it happened sometime on New Year’s Eve night. The city was notified by several residents on New Year’s Day.

Whiteville Emergency Services Director Hal Lowder says Whiteville PD officers immediately removed the flag.

Currie stressed that the City of Whiteville had nothing to do with this flag being put up…and do not condone the activity. He says at this point, they don’t know if it was meant as a joke, or if there was malicious intent. Either way Currie says it’s unacceptable.

As an added oddity Currie says the person or persons who put the controversial flag up also took down the American flag the city already had up and replaced it with an American flag of their own (in addition to the confederate one).
