Whiteville teen charged in deadly crash that killed passenger

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A teenager faces charges in last month’s crash that killed a Whiteville High School student.

The 16-year-old faces several charges, including reckless driving to endanger, misdemeanor death by vehicle, no operators license, unsafe passing, and exceeding posted speed.

According to the citation, the teenager was heading south and attempted to pass in a no passing zone. The car ran off the road to the left, hit a ditch, then a fence, and then overturned.

The crash happened in early June on Sunset Terrace Drive, not far from Chadbourn Highway.

Three teens were thrown from the vehicle, one was partially ejected.

Kaiden Powell died in the crash.
