Who will UNCW face next week in the NCAA’s? Where will the Seahawks play?

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — In two more days the NCAA will release the bracket for the upcoming NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. We believe we have a pretty good idea of where the UNCW Seahawks will play and who they will face. Of course, this is unofficial, but you never know it could end up being right on target.

UNCW won the CAA Championship Tournament title on Monday thanks to some stellar play in the second half and overtime against Hofstra in Baltimore. Let’s be honest, as the tournament champions of the CAA your seeding will likely be a 12 at best and a 14 at the worst. We’re gonna split the difference and say the UNCW Seahawks will be a 13 seed, which means they will play a 4 seed. We project Duke to be a 4 seed and we also project Kentucky to be a 4 seed. They’re two of the biggest traditional heavyweights in the sport. Duke is just over two hours away. Kentucky is coached by former UNCW Seahawk John Calipari.

So what about the where will UNCW play? First of all, there are 8 first round regional sites. Raleigh is the closest. That would be awfully convenient, but don’t look for the Seahawks to play in Raleigh. We anticipate North Carolina and Virginia to be there, which means there won’t be any 12, 13, or 14 seeds on the home court of the Wolfpack. Cutting straight to the chase we envision UNCW to be sent to Providence, Rhode Island. If this indeed happens you’ll see UNCW play their first round NCAA tournament game on Thursday in Providence against Duke or Kentucky. If the location turns out to not be Providence, then the next logical locations would be Denver, Brooklyn or Spokane, but definitely not Raleigh and probably not St. Louis either.
