WHQR celebrates 40th anniversary with “Back to the 80s” Bash

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — One popular news organization was taking it back to the 80s Friday night, all part of a special anniversary.

Wilmington’s NPR station, WHQR, went “Back to the 80s” to celebrate the station’s 40th anniversary.

The station began broadcasting back in April of 1984.

Guests dressed up for several different categories, ranging from power pop and punk to urban cowboy.

Station manager Kevin Crane said it means so much that the Wilmington community has always been welcoming and supportive of the station.

“There’s people here tonight that helped us start the station, there’s people that still volunteer for us and people tell us that they have been long-time listeners of the station,” Crane said. “It’s a one-way thing so it really means a lot for people to show up and tell us that we really like what you’re doing and we want to help you celebrate this momentous occasion.”

A best-dressed contest was held where each category winner got a pair of golden rollerskates.
