Wildlife rescue urges public to give nesting Canada Geese space

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s nesting season for Canada Geese, and a local wildlife rescue is asking people to give them space.

Canada Geese often return to the same nesting areas each year, carefully choosing spots close to food and water.

In Wilmington, many have been nesting in busier areas like parking lots, and near stores and mall entrances.

Skywatch Bird Rescue says it’s receiving calls from people asking to relocate the birds and their nests, but that’s not allowed.

Canada Geese and their nests are federally protected, making it illegal to move or disturb them.

Experts say the public should also avoid leaving out food, which can attract other animals and potential predators.

Once the eggs hatch, the parents quickly guide their goslings to the nearest pond.

Until then, the best thing people can do is drive slowly, be patient, and keep a safe distance.
