Wilmington basketball team captures USBA national title

ATLANTA, GA (WWAY) — Former UNCW basketball forward Tiger Aldrich is the head coach of the the 9th grade Wilmington Waves basketball team. Aldrich’s team captured the 9th grade USBA Boys Nationals title on Saturday in Atlanta with a victory over the NC Wildcats.

The Wilmington Waves went undefeated in pool play with a 4-0 record. The pool play first place finish earned the Waves a spot in the single elimination bracket tournament that tipped off on Friday. Wilmington defeated the NC Wizards on Friday in the tournament quarterfinals 69-38. The Waves beat the ESBA Elite out of West Virginia Saturday morning 64-53. The Waves defeated the NC Wildcats 63-41 on Saturday afternoon 63-41 to claim the title. The Waves connected on 11 three-point shots in the title game. Freddie Taylor made four, Wiz Vaughn and Tyler Steinman had three each. Josh Aldrich added one from behind the arc.

25 teams representing 8 states competed in the 9th grade USBA Boys Nationals.

The Waves have accumulated more than 40 wins this summer during their travel ball season. They’ve only lost once.
