Wilmington celebrates grand re-opening of roadway after $15M upgrade
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY-TV) – The city of Wilmington celebrated their grand re-opening of Fifth Avenue on Wednesday.
The roadway located between downtown and Greenfield Lake Park underwent two years of improvement with intermittent closures.
Now, Fifth Avenue features sidewalks, street re-surfacing, sidewalk and curb repairs, new bike lanes and three replacements in the median.
The city partnered with Cape Fear Public Utility Authority to also replace water and sewer utilities along Fifth Avenue.
Cammie Bellamy, public information officer for CFPUA says it was satisfying seeing the completed project.
“This has been a longtime coming, it took a big lift on the front end, on CFUPA’s part to replace all of the water and sewer mains underneath the roadway and then to just see it repaved and open to the cyclists and pedestrians and drivers as it should be,” Bellamy Said.
The city says the project cost over $15 million with $12 million paid by CFPUA.
