Wilmington childcare center catches on fire

WILMINGTON (WWAY) — The College Road Early Childhood Center experienced a fire within the building Thursday night.
The fire was quickly extinguished, and school staff and administration met first responders on the scene to assess the situation.
There will be no school for students, tomorrow, Friday, January 9th.
New Hanover County Schools Superintendent, Dr. Christopher Barnes, sent out this statement concerning the fire.
“Dear CRECC Families,
This evening, CRECC experienced a fire inside the building. We are thankful to share that the fire was quickly extinguished and that our staff and administration met first responders on scene to support and assess the situation. Everyone is safe, and we are grateful for the swift actions taken to keep our school community protected.
To allow officials the time needed to assess the building, there will be no school for students tomorrow, Friday, January 9, 2026.
We expect to have more information once we are able to access the building, and we will share an update with families tomorrow regarding plans for next week.
Thank you for your understanding, patience, and continued support of our students and staff. Please do not hesitate to reach out if your family has immediate questions or concerns.”
