WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A century-old landmark in downtown Wilmington may soon be getting some much-needed repairs.

Monday morning, Wilmington City Council received an update on the Kenan fountain, following their regularly scheduled agenda briefing.

The fountain, which has stood at the center of Market Street and 5th Avenue since 1921, was damaged about a year and a half ago by a contractor working with the NC Department of Transportation.

During Monday’s presentation, the city’s public works director recommended repairing the damage — estimated at more than $285,000 — and removing benches and balusters in preparation for a possible future relocation.

Council could vote on a funding ordinance at its July 15 meeting.
