Wilmington detox unit reaches capacity ‘shockingly fast’
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A new treatment facility for addiction and recovery has opened in Wilmington and quickly reached capacity.
This new detox unit adds 48 beds for patients battling addiction, but there are no beds available right now because they are already taken.
The Wilmington Treatment Center held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday for its new addition, but doors opened for patients back in January.
Director David Drum says he is excited to have the additional program, but he says the fact the beds are already full shows just what kind of need the Port City has for facilities like this one.
“It’s a huge investment a $12 million investment this building and just really takes up our whole quality and obviously it’s a quantity increase of 48 beds but this building is already full and that just tells you this is a huge need that is here in Wilmington,” Drum said.
Drum says he is excited to be in the community and on the front lines of this epidemic.
There are plans to build a hospitalization building with dorms opening this summer.
