Wilmington firefighter shares what it’s like working on Thanksgiving

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Not everyone has the holiday off this thanksgiving, but for Wilmington Firefighters—being together with the people they work with each day is like having extended members of the family.

WWAY stopped by WFD Headquarters on Market Street where many of the firefighters contributed various dishes for their big Thanksgiving meal.

Captain Jonathan Ellis has been with the city for 19 years. After working together with other firefighters over the years, Ellis says his co-workers are like family.

“It’s another family. We’re a big family. It’s just like at your house, we get to invite family over and enjoy it but if we get a call in the middle of eating dinner we got to rush and do what we need to do,” Ellis said.

Ellis adds the department also invites first responders that don’t have a place to eat, including firefighters from other departments or police officers that are working nearby.
