Wilmington holds first International Make Music Day celebration

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Friday was International Make Music Day and Wilmington held its first celebration of it at the Harrelson Center.

Wilmington joins more than 1,000 cities worldwide to celebrate Make Music Day.

Musicians from throughout the Cape Fear region, both professional and amateur, took part in the event.

Instruments from violins to trumpets were available for anyone to try their hand at playing.

Wilmington Symphony Orchestra executive director Liz Scanlon said its great having a day to spread the joy of music, especially to young kids.

“The arts are so important to families and to Wilmington,” Scanlon said. “It’s important that kids understand that they don’t need to play an instrument to really love music and if they don’t know what the instruments are, to watch other people playing them. It may inspire them to learn how to play. And it creates a lifelong learning and love for music.”

In addition to the event at Wilmington, the North Carolina Arts Council supported events in several other locations across the state, including Statesville, Raleigh, and Winston Salem.
