Wilmington man arrested on arson charges

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Police Department arrested a man for arson and other charges on Thursday morning.
According to WPD, officers responded to a call around 2:50 a.m. regarding a suspicious subject attempting to gain entry into a residence on Colwell Avenue.
Police say when they arrived, an officer detected the smell of smoke and located Adrian Watkins, 31, attempting to open a back window of the residence. Watkins attempted to run away but fell and was quickly taken into custody.
During the response, officers observed smoke coming from a shed attached to the residence. An officer entered the shed and discovered burning cardboard, which they extinguished before the fire could spread further.
Watkins has been charged with the following offenses:
- First Degree Arson
- Felony Breaking & Entering
- Second Degree Trespass
- Injury to Personal Property
- Four outstanding warrants served
He is currently being held at the New Hanover County Jail without bond.
