Wilmington man arrested on drug charges

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington man was arrested on drug charges on Saturday after a traffic stop.

According to Wilmington Police Department, an officer observed a man riding a bicycle in the 400 block of Evans Street.

The officer initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of Gaston Street and Evans Street after the suspect failed to stop at a stop sign.

Police say when he stopped him, the man began reaching toward his waistband and was immediately detained by the officer.

Richard Gibson, 31, dropped 24 bindles of heroin in the area where he was taken into custody.

A subsequent search revealed cocaine on Gibson, he was charged with:

  • Possession with Intent to Manufacture, Sell, or Deliver Schedule II Controlled Substance
  • Possession with Intent to Manufacture, Sell, or Deliver Cocaine
  • Felony Possession of Schedule II Controlled Substance
  • Felony Possession of Cocaine
  • Littering/Dumping
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  • Resist, Delay, Obstruct Public Officers

Gibson received a $30,000 secured bond and was taken to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.
