Wilmington man celebrates 102nd birthday
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A local man celebrated his 102nd birthday on Sunday.
Born in Germany in 1923, Ernie Garbade is a resident at The Woods at Holly Tree in Wilmington.
On Sunday, Garbade celebrated his 102nd birthday surrounded by his family.
When asked what his secret is to living well, he said to not sweat the small stuff.
“Don’t get excited because something doesn’t go your way,” he said. “You know? Relax, because it’s going to go away anyway.”
Garbade says he first came to the US in 1929. He says because of the outbreak of World War II at the time, moving likely saved his life.
