Wilmington man pleads guilty to supplying drugs to man who overdosed and died

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington man will spend up to 10 years in prison for supplying fentanyl laced drugs that killed a man.

Johnnie Jones, 43, pleaded guilty in New Hanover County Superior Court to one count of Death by Distribution, a class C Felony.

According to the district attorney’s office, evidence showed that in August 2021, the New Hanover County Vice and Narcotics Division began investigating an overdose death after the victim was found dead at his residence.

Detectives were able to identify who provided the fentanyl laced heroin to the victim. This person led them to Jones as the supplier of the Fentanyl. The autopsy confirmed the victim died from a fentanyl induced toxicity.

Jones admitted to the sale and took responsibility for his actions in court.

Judge Frank Jones sentenced Jones to between 7 1/2 and 10 years in prison.
