Wilmington named Community Wildlife Habitat by National Wildlife Federation
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear Garden Club is celebrating its centennial year with events all year long.
On Tuesday, the club held an event inside Thalian Hall to celebrate the city getting recognition as a Community Wildlife Habitat.
This makes Wilmington one of 200 municipalities across the country to be certified by the National Wildlife Federation.
The recognition means cities or towns support sustainability and wildlife-friendly initiatives.
Garden Club president Delores Hawes said this certification shows Wilmington’s commitment to helping wildlife live and thrive in the city.
“We’re providing the four essential components that wildlife need: food and water and shelter and a place to raise their young,” Hawes said. “And it’s important that we do that in a sustainable manner by planting native plants that provides that natural food source for the animals.”
During Tuesday’s event, Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo gave a proclamation designating May as Garden for Wildlife Month in the city
