Wilmington Parks Bond heads to ballot
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — There is a lot on the line for this year’s election, but aside from selecting candidates, voters in Wilmington also have to decide whether or not they want to approve a $38 million Parks Bond.
The city held a drop-in session Thursday evening to give the community an opportunity to learn more about the proposals and ask questions.
Resident, Hollis Briggs Jr. says the Port City needs more places for children to play and grow in the area.
“Kids need something to do. We have a hopelessness problem with kids but I think if we keep them busy I think we might get somewhere,” Briggs said.
The 2016 Parks Bond includes 15 different projects including the North Waterfront Park where they plan to develop a large concert venue. It also includes the Maides Park and the Martin Luther King Center where they want build new multipurpose fields and gyms.
Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo says the bond is getting great feedback.
“I’ve heard nothing but positive things,” Saffo said. “I’ve heard that there’s a specific need. I’m hearing it from the young people, I’m hearing it from the parents, I’m hearing it from people in the neighborhoods. They want the open space, they need the open space.”
However, if approved the $38M bond would increase property taxes. Program specialist Marian Doherty broke down the numbers during the informational session.
“Just as an example if the tax payer has a home valued at $200,000 there would be a take increase. It would be $3.50 per month as a tax increase to fund these projects,” Doherty said.
Which equals a total of $42 more in property taxes each year. Briggs says there are some details that need to be worked out, but in the long run, it is something the community needs.
Residents will get the chance to vote for or against the Parks Bond November 8th.
