Wilmington PD moving away from SABLE helicopter program in favor of drones

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Police Department is moving away from its manned SABLE helicopter program, in favor of a new drone initiative.

The SABLE program was created in 2006 and expanded around 2018 to include a drone component.

The helicopters used for the program have high operating costs and replacement parts have become a challenge to find.

Lieutenant Greg Willett is a spokesman for WPD and he discussed how finding licensed pilots only adds to the challenge. Leaving the department to move towards unmanned vehicle for the time being.

Although the department is moving towards unmanned vehicles, Lt. Willett explained, “If manned aircraft is needed for a mission, police will work with the North Carolina Highway Patrol or the Air National Guard to use their aircraft.”
