Wilmington Police demonstrate new tasers, live streaming body cameras
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Police Department has some new technology that will assist officers in the field.
On Tuesday, the police department demonstrated their new Axon Body Cam 3, a device we told you about a few months ago.
The body cameras can now livestream at any time, and from anywhere back to police headquarters
WPD also demonstrated the new Axon Taser 10. The new tasers allow officers to discharge up to ten probes.
With the tasers officers had previously, they only had one chance to hit the target.
Captain Rodney Dawson said the body cameras will automatically start recording when a weapon is pulled from its holster.
“What we have it’s called a signal side arm. So, it’s a device that goes on the holster of our guns. Anytime a gun is drawn it will send out that signal, activating a camera,” Dawson explained.
Dawson noted that signal will trigger any body cam near the officer, including ones worn by other agencies like the sheriff’s office.
