Wilmington Police Department encourages motorcycle, dirt bike, and ATV safety

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A campaign by local law enforcement is ensuring safety on the roadways.

It’s called ‘Getting You There Safe’ and it’s catered to those who ride motorcycles, dirt bikes, mopeds and ATV’s.

Brandon Shope is a spokesman for Wilmington Police Department.

He said last year alone WPD saw 78 collisions that involved a motorcycle or moped. Three of those resulted in death.

Shope said this has been an active campaign for two years but this year they are honing in on spreading awareness.

“It’s an opportunity for our officers to educate the community on how to get from point-A to point-B safer,” Shope said.

Shope said Police Chief Donny Williams is especially passionate about this series because he once found himself in a serious moped accident.
