Wilmington Police Departments hosts Axon Road Show

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) –The Wilmington Police Department collaborates closely with the company Axon to equip officers with tools for their work in the field.

At police headquarters, WPD hosted the Axon Road Show, inviting the public to see firsthand the technology used behind the badge.

One of the standout exhibits was the virtual reality simulator, a training tool that allows officers to practice various aspects of police work. The simulator helps them hone skills in everything from shooting range exercises to critical thinking in high-pressure, real-life scenarios.

Captain Rodney Dawson of WPD emphasized the importance of these demonstration days.

“It’s fun to come in and see this, but there is the serious side to this where we don’t take this technology lightly. We understand how powerful it is, and we want to be good stewards of that. But we also want the public to understand its uses, how we use it, and its implications,” Captain Dawson explained.

According to Captain Dawson, most of the technology on display is already in use by WPD officers.
